Great for quiet studying. There are plenty of tables available. However, it's hard to do study in a group here because it's too quiet. There's also a great probability that you'll fall asleep.
More of a student hangout than a study area. Can be especially loud and crowded at times.
A great place to share ideas and work in groups. Not the best place for solitary study.

An ECE undergraduate student leadership organization. Steel Ring
establishes programs and activities for the electrical/computer
engineering undergraduate student body. Examples of Steel Ring functions
include the successful ECE Study Hall, a spring and fall picnic,
and numerous educational programs. Steel Ring also works to promote
the University of Iowa ECE department by helping out with the Engineering
Open House. Steel Ring is unique because members work hands on with
faculty. Membership applications are accepted each semester. Students
interested in becoming a part of Steel Ring should first check out the

IEEE is a nationwide ECE student organization with branches at colleges across the country. The student branch here at the University of Iowa works to promote EE and its related fields throughout the state of Iowa. A fee is required for membership, but members receive a free magazine and other benefits. Think of it as a PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) for engineers. You can get as involved as you want, or you can just pay your membership dues and tell everyone you're a member. Check Out their page:
The Hawkeye Engineer is an undergraduate student publication that comes out once or twice a semester. Students write and publish their own articles and do their own graphic design. The focus of the magazine ranges from local UI Engineering politics to advances in technology worldwide. Also, the Hawkeye Engineer has just been released for the first time on the web. You can check out the page at:

Often a student will take an engineering course with no notion of the significance of the material in relation to other courses. They may not even understand what a course is about until they are well into the semester. These realities were the inspiration for the ROADMAP project. The ROADMAP project presents both curriculum and concepts in a flowing diagram allowing students to visualize how the information they are learning in a current class relates to what they will encounter further down the road. Living in the information and technologically driven world that we do, it is important to know as many ways of communicating as possible. Using the WWW today is almost second nature to most people and is probably the most effective way of sharing ideas. This workshop allows students to set up their ICAEN accounts and create a personal web site that others may visit. The pages outline both the syntax of HTML (the language used to write web pages), and design concepts that distinguish a "good" web page from a "bad" one. The URL for the workshop is
