You must first meet the Graduate College requirements, and then additionally the requirements of the department for which you are applying. Apply Online, the $60 application fee ($100 for international students) is payable by Discover, MasterCard, or Visa.

Biomedical Engineering (BME)

BME Detailed Admission Requirements

  • GPA 3.0 MS, 3.25 PHD
  • 310 GRE (Q+V)
  • We do not require the GRE Advanced Examination (subject test) in Engineering.
  • Recommended GRE quantitative score is 160, and verbal 150, for a total of 310. 
  • 85 IBT; 7 IELTS total, no subscore less than 6.0.
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Resume/CV
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Baccalaureate degree in engineering or related field such as mathematical, physical, or life sciences.  Non-engineering backgrounds see BME detailed admission requirements.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (CBE)

CBE Detailed Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant major
  • A statement of purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official GRE scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681)
  • GRE: 310 (verbal + quantitative); analytical writing score 3.0. These are recommended scores but not minimum scores; applicants with GRE scores below the recommended score may be considered especially if compelling evidence of research and scholarly potential is clear.
  • GRE Advanced Examination (subject test) in Engineering is not required for admission to the program; however, these scores should be forwarded to the department if the Advanced Examination is taken
  • GPA: 3.0 on 4.0 scale in relevant degree
  • TOEFL if English is not your first language: 100 If below 100 must take an English Proficiency Exam once on campus
  • Other material that can be useful in assessing applicant's likelihood of success in graduate studies may also be submitted

CBE Application Deadlines

  • Applications accepted at any time
  • Fall - February 1st

Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)

CEE Detailed Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant major; depending on program area may need to take additional undergraduate coursework for some majors
  • Personal résumé
  • A statement of purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official GRE scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681)
  • GRE: 301 (verbal + quantitative); Lower scores are considered with other evidence of academic promise 
  • GPA: 3.0 on 4.0 scale in relevant degree
  • TOEFL if English is not your first language: 81 for internet based exam or 550 for the paper-based exam
  • In the event that an applicant has a GRE, TOEFL, or GPA score slightly below the stated criteria, admission may be considered if other evidence indicates likely success in graduate study

All students are encouraged to have all application materials completed by January 15th to be considered for financial aid in the fall semester.

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)

ECE Detailed Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant major (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics): may need to take additional undergraduate coursework.
  • A personal résumé/ curriculum vitae
  • A statement of purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation with ECE recommendation form completed
  • GRE scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681)
  • GRE: 318 (verbal + quantitative)
  • GPA: 3.0
  • TOEFL if English is not your first language: 81 for internet based exam.
  • ECE Supplemental Graduate Application Information
  • Preference for financial assistance is given to PhD candidates.

ECE Application Deadlines

Priority for financial support will be given to those applicants who complete their application file by December 15, 2015.

  • Fall semester international applicants - January 1
  • Applications for spring or summer semesters are automatically deferred to the fall semester.
  • Summer/Fall semester domestic applicants with financial aid - January 1
  • Summer/Fall semester domestic applicants without financial aid - July 15

 

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE)

Mechanical Engineering Detailed Admission Requirements

  • Students who have earned a B.S. or a M.S. degree in an engineering curriculum or a curriculum in the mathematical or physical sciences are eligible to be considered for admission to the graduate program in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts
  • Statement of purpose
  • GRE scores: 152V; 159Q; 4.0AW 
  • TOEFL if English is not your first language: 600 PBT (equivalent to 250 CBT; 100 IBT).  Alternatively, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score 7.
  • Some of the above requirements can be waived in select cases when other components of the application are particularly outstanding. Satisfaction of the above requirements does not guarantee admission.

Mechanical Engineering Application Deadlines

  • Fall semester - January 15 (admission decision-March 1)
  • Spring Semester - September 1 (admission decision-October 1)
  • Summer Session - January 15

 

Industrial Engineering Detailed Admissions Requirements

  • Students can be accepted with a BS or BA degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, psychology, and other science areas. At a minimum, students with non-engineering bachelor’s degrees are expected to have a good knowledge of calculus. Preliminary coursework may be required for students without an industrial engineering bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts
  • Statement of purpose
  • GRE scores: 153V; 151Q; 4.5AW
  • TOEFL if English is not your first language: 600 PBT (equivalent to 250 CBT; 100 IBT).  Alternatively, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score 7.
  • Some of the above requirements can be waived in select cases when other components of the application are particularly outstanding. Satisfaction of the above requirements does not guarantee admission.

Industrial Engineering Application Deadlines
