Mikaela Thiel

Who are you?

Name: Mikaela Thiel

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Minors/Certificates: None

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Chanhassen MN

What is one piece of advice you would give to an incoming freshman?

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to live with other engineers in an LLC, it is a great experience! I met my main friend group on my floor and the floor above me, and I would definitely say that I was a better student freshman year because I was surrounded by other motivated people who I could work together with on assignments and studying.

What organizations outside the college of engineering do you belong to?

I play piccolo in the Hawkeye Marching Band, I am involved at the Newman Catholic Student Center, and I volunteer at the hospital in the cardiology and orthopedics units.

Have you had any international experience? If so, where did you go, for how long, and what did you do?

I unfortunately do not yet.

How are you an "engineer ... and something more"?

I am an engineer and something more by being very involved in music on campus. I am in my second season as a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, I play flute in the concert band, and I am going to Ireland this coming spring break with the band to tour and play multiple concerts.

Have you done research with a professor? If so, what department was the professor in and what was your research about?

I have not been involved with research on campus yet.

Is there something else you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I taught myself how to play the ukulele!

What is your favorite part about being a student at The University of Iowa?

I love the wide variety of things to do- from concerts to football games to fun events at the IMU, there’s always something going on.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

I really liked my Engineering Problem Solving 2 professor, Professor Braun. He was funny, very engaging to listen to, and I learned everything I know about coding so far from him.

What has been your favorite course?

My favorite course so far has been statics. Towards the beginning of the class I spent three nights a week in the tutoring center because I was struggling so much with it, but finally something clicked and by the end of the course it had become the class I enjoyed the most!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time at The University of Iowa?

I love going to check out all the different places to eat with my friends- my top few places are Molly’s Cupcakes, Shorts, Aspen Leaf, and El Patron.
