Admission Requirements and Data on First-Year Students

Admission Requirements:

  • First-year students: Applicants still in high school (including students who are taking college courses while still in high school)
  • Transfer students: Applicants who have attended another college or university
  • International students: Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Returning students: Applicants who previously attended the University of Iowa and who would like to resume their studies

The fall 2015 engineering first-year students are smart, diverse, & high-achieving:

  • # = 561
  • 29% are women (compared to the national average of 20%)
  • Ethnicity: 75% Caucasian, 5% Asian, 16% underrepresented minority students (including 21 Multi-Racial students, 48 Hispanic/Latinos, 18 African Americans, 2 American Indians); 4% international students
  • Average ACT composite = 27.6
  • Average ACT math subscore = 28.3
  • Average High School GPA = 3.82
  • Average Regents Admission Index (RAI) = 300
  • 8% are class valedictorians; 22% are in the top 5% of their high school graduating class
  • 25% are 1st generation college students
  • 42% are from Iowa, 40% from Illinois, 5% from Minnesota, 3% from Wisconsin, remaining 10% are from 15 other states and 5 countries.
  • 43% were offered admission into the university honors program
  • 83% received at least one university or engineering merit scholarship
  • 96% lived in one of the university residence halls; most popular living/learning community choices: People in Engineering (PIE), Women in Science & Engineering (WISE), and Honors
