Ibrahim Demir, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering and associate faculty research engineer at IIHR--Hydroscience & Engineering, received the Outreach/Media Award June 21 from the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM).

Demir was recognized for his new artificial-intelligence algorithm called the “Flood AI Alpha.”

The award was established to acknowledge exemplary efforts on the part of media to increase information and/or awareness of flood issues with the general public. It is also for an individual, private organization or governmental unit or agency that have increased information and/or awareness of flood issues with the general public. 

The Association of State Floodplain Managers is an organization of professionals involved in floodplain management, flood hazard mitigation, National Flood Insurance Program, and flood preparedness, warning and recovery. ASFPM  is a respected voice in floodplain management practice and policy in the United States because it represents flood hazard specialists of local, state and federal government, research community, insurance industry and the fields of engineering, hydrologic forecasting, emergency response, water resources and others.
