Matthew G. Finley is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a graduate research assistant in Asst. Prof. Tyler Bell’s Holo Reality Lab. Finley’s work was recently presented the “Best Student Paper” award in the “3D Measurement and Data Processing” conference at the 2020 Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) International Symposium on Electronic Imaging in Burlingame, California. The paper, “Variable Precision Depth Encoding for 3D Range Geometry Compression,” proposed a novel method of 3D geometry / 3D data compression that is flexible and easily customizable for adoption within a wide range of applications, such as medicine, manufacturing, entertainment, and homeland security.
