More and more students are pursuing engineering degrees at the University of Iowa. So the university says it needs more space, at a cost of $37 million.

The university broke ground on a new 65,00 square foot addition to the school's main engineering building Friday. The project is still about 18 million dollars short of what it needs.

It will feature two new classrooms, study areas, and new digital and mechanical tools like 3D printers.

The addition won't be just for engineering students. It's also meant to bring in art students and promote collaboration.

"We have engineers and artists working together on projects to learn more about how creativity unfolds in different fields," UI Dean of Engineering Alec Scranton said.

The state regents approved the project two years ago. The UI hopes to complete the addition by next fall.
