Karl Lonngren, UI professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering, has been honored by his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as one of 125 People of Impact.

Lonngren is among the 125 alumni and faculty who have made significant contributions to the UW department, university and also in industry.

Lonngren graduated with a BS degree in 1960, an MS degree in 1962, and a PhD degree in 1964, all in electrical engineering from Wisconsin.

He is co-author of the books, "Fundamentals of Electromagnetics with MATLAB (two editions)," and the children's book, "What Happened in the Middle of the Night,"  along with friend and UI alumnus John Savov.  Lonngren also authored "Introduction to Physical Electronics."

Since he was a kid, Lonngren wondered what happens during the middle of the night. In his retirement, Lonngren decided to write about it in the form of this story. He joined with Syrbu, an author, illustrator and dentist to complete "What Happened in the Middle of the Night."

To show their appreciation for friendly elephants around the world, Lonngren and Syrbu committed to donating 15% of proceeds directly to various elephant foundations, such as the International Elephant Foundation and Save Elephant Foundation. These groups support conservation, education and research of the world's African and Asian elephant populations.
