A celebratory memorial service  for Dr. Abdel-Aziz A. Fouad, a celebrated electrical engineering academic scholar and industry consultant and member of the College of Engineering's Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy, will be held November 4 in Fort Collins, CO.  Fouad died at the age of 89 October 21.

Fouad was a pioneer in the electrical engineering field of power systems dynamics and stability, most notably in his visionary contributions to academic research, teaching and publication, collaboration between academia and the power industry and early explorations of technology and social change.   Among numerous professional recognitions, Fouad was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, was an Anson Marston Distinguished Professor, received the Anson Marston Medal from the ISU Alumni Foundation and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (“IEEE”).   In over 35 years at ISU, Fouad was co-author of two widely-read books, taught multiple classes - including creation of several early computer-based educational courses - and authored over 100 publications in his field.   He also served as a visiting professor at the University of the Philippines, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Electric Power Research Institute of Palo Alto, California.   One of his most enduring contributions to academic and industry collaboration was co-founding of ISU’s Power Affiliate Research Program in 1963, known since 1988 as ISU’s Electric Power Research Center.  

Fouad was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1928, received a B.C. degree in engineering from the University of Cairo in 1950, immigrated to the USA in 1952 and received a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1953 and a Ph.D from Iowa State University in 1956.
