Over its 100 years, the University of Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has fostered professional networks across the country, instilled an ethos of service, and established a record of accolades.

As the AIChE chapter turned 100 years old in March, faculty, staff, and students reflected on its legacy of excellence and continuing momentum. There was a gathering at the Seamans Center commons on March 28, 2024, to commemorate the milestone.

“My involvement with AIChE has allowed me to befriend my fellow students at the University of Iowa, network with students from other universities at conferences, and give back to my community through regular service events, said Josiah Power, a chemical engineering undergraduate and the chapter's 2023-24 president.

“I am grateful for the collaborative efforts achieved by our student board and chapter advisor Professor Murhammer, and I look forward to leading our chapter as president into another century of academic excellence.”

The UI chapter was one of the first student AIChE chapters in the United States when it was established in 1924. David Murhammer, a professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, has advised the chapter since 1990.

During his tenure, the chapter has received 30 outstanding student chapter awards, most recently in 2023. Murhammer has been named outstanding student chapter advisor.

"The number of awards received by our student chapter, particularly the scholarships and ChemE Jeopardy success, are indicative of both the high engagement level and quality of our students over the years," Murhammer said.

The chapter consists of second year chemical engineering majors and beyond. The chapter coordinates guest speakers from around the country and supports professional enhancement and volunteer activities to supplement student’s education. Members participate in competitions such as Chem-E-Jeopardy and Chem-E-Car at regional and national AIChE conferences. Other events include organizing a children's day camp in the fall and spring semesters.

The chapter has built something of a dynasty in Chem-E Jeopardy, having won five times and finishing runner-up four times in the 13 years of the competition.
